Interstate Welcome Centers

South Dakota's Interstate Welcome Centers along Interstate 90 (east/west) and Interstate 29 (north/south) are great places to rest or stretch your legs, but they offer so much more to travelers than that. You can speak with a travel counselor, pick up brochures, connect to Wi-Fi and find up-to-date road and weather information.
 


 
FOR THE 2024 SEASON

All Interstate Welcome Centers will open to the public on Monday, May 20, and will remain open seven days per week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

The Wilmot, Valley Springs, Vermillion and Spearfish locations close for the season on Sunday, September 29. The Chamberlain location will remain open through Sunday, October 20.

Restroom facilities are available even with these Welcome Centers are not staffed.
 


 

TRAVEL COUNSELORS

From mid-May through September, a crew of more than 40 travel counselors staff the five Interstate Welcome Centers. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, these ambassadors will greet you with a smile and answers for all of your travel questions.

AMENITIES

In addition to seasonal travel counselors, you can also find the following amenities at our Interstate Welcome Centers:

  • Brochures and other printed material for businesses and attractions statewide*
  • Free South Dakota highway maps and vacation guides*
  • Free Wi-Fi via the "TravelSouthDakota" network
  • Cultural and historical displays*
  • Lewis and Clark museum (Chamberlain)*
  • Dignity statue (Chamberlain)
  • Short term parking for cars, RVs and trucks
  • Restrooms – ADA accessible
  • Baby changing stations
  • Picnic tables and shelters – ADA accessible
  • Pet exercise areas
  • RV dump stations*
    (not all rest areas have dump stations, view the South Dakota Rest Areas map for locations)
  • Water fountains and potable water filling stations
  • Soft drink vending machines
  • Emergency phones
  • Security camera monitoring system

Note: All amenities marked with an asterisk (*) are only available seasonally when the Interstate Welcome Centers are in operation.

Note: Our information desks close for the winter season, however, restrooms, pay phones, Wi-Fi and all other rest area amenities remain accessible year-round.

Rest areas offer many of the same amenities as the Welcome Centers, but are not staffed with travel counselors at any point throughout the year. Wi-Fi is not currently available at any of the rest areas.
