In 1914, this 24,000-square-foot building was built by the Homestake Gold Mine for their workers and families. It was given to the City of Lead in 1972. Unfortunately, the theater was nearly destroyed by fire in 1984. Restoration work continues alongside performing arts events. Concerts, movies, theatre, dance and weddings are hosted year-round. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1933. From 1933-1942, the CCC was a public work relief program for unemployed, unmarried men. More than 27,000 men contributed to many significant projects in South Dakota and helped to support their families back home. The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead offers incredible views, a surface tour, exhibit area, and an outstanding gift shop. From our deck, view the 1,250-foot-deep Homestake Open Cut, an iconic landmark in the Black Hills, and see the many varieties of rock that created this unique landscape.
