Built by English settler Henry Holland in 1884, the Milbank Grist Mill was completely reconstructed in 2009. This piece of history stands 44 feet high and is fitted with four sails, seven feet wide and 30 feet long. Tours and live demonstrations are available several times a year. Public art thrives in the alleyways of downtown Brookings. The Urban Canvas consists of seven murals, five of which were created by artist, Robbie Jelsma. The sixth was a collaboration with SDSU art students and artist Molly Wicks. The seventh was created in the fall of 2019 by Pandr Design Company from San Diego, incorporating local elements. The mural is part of the South Dakota Department of Tourism’s “State of Create” campaign. These seven colorful outdoor canvases make great backdrops for a family photo or styled photo shoot.Mellette House
Located in Watertown, the Mellette House was built in 1885 by Arthur Calvin Mellette. He was the last Governor of Dakota Territory and the first Governor of South Dakota. The Mellette Memorial Association has restored this home to its former beauty. The original furnishings, family portraits and heirlooms given by the Mellette family make this historic spot unique in the Midwest. We are open 1-5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday, May 1-October 1.
