About halfway to Sioux Falls, make a pit stop in Omaha, NE. If you’re looking to sightsee a bit, stop at Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Headquarters Visitor Center, where you can learn about the legendary trek of these two frontiersmen and their indigenous guide. And no trip here is complete without “Bobbing,” or traversing the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, which connects Nebraska to Iowa. Keep your eyes out for a bridge troll named OMAR!

Omaha, NE → Sioux City, IA (1.5 hours)

Side Trip to Mitchell

If you’ve got some extra time, head about an hour west to Mitchell for archaeological sites, an iconic roadside attraction and fresh-air fun. A visit to the World’s Only Corn Palace (604 N Main St.) is obligatory. Snap photos of the building’s unique façade – and be sure to pick up a popcorn ball or two for the road.

For a little outdoor fun, rent a bike, paddleboard, canoe or paddleboat and explore the shores of Lake Mitchell, a reservoir minutes from downtown. While you’re there, check out Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village (3200 Indian Village Road), an archaeological site where you can see archaeologists digging for artifacts in real time – and you can dig for arrowheads yourself.
