Culture and Nature: Exploring the Native American Scenic Byway

See what one writer discovered on this magnificent stretch of road

Central South Dakota is home to a hidden gem that weaves together history, culture, and stunning landscapes in a single scenic route. The Native American National and State Scenic Byway, stretching north and south through this region, offers travelers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding environment. Engage in Native American history as you travel through the lands of the Yankton, Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux tribes.

Being someone that always chooses highways over interstates, I jumped at the chance to take a portion of the Native American National and State Scenic Byway from Pierre to Chamberlain! Yes, traveling highways can take longer than interstate routes, but I promise you this scenic byway is so much more interesting — and worth the additional minutes of travel. I absolutely love having the ability to stop and get a closer look at something I find interesting along the way. And as the byway winds through central South Dakota, it unveils a panorama of natural beauty that's as diverse as it is breathtaking.

I began my journey on SD Highway 1806 just south of Fort Pierre. This route was an approximately 100-mile stretch that led me through Lower Brule and Fort Thompson before I ended my journey in Chamberlain. As you navigate the route, you'll encounter several significant sites and attractions that offer insights into the traditions, struggles, and triumphs of the Indigenous peoples who have called this land home. You will also see stunning landscapes as you cross Cedar Creek, drive along the Missouri River, and stop at the overlook north of Lower Brule.

The Spirit of the Circle Monument is a historical landmark located along SD Highway 47 just as you cross Lake Sharpe into Fort Thompson. This monument honors the Dakota people who were forcibly removed from Minnesota to the Crow Creek Reservation in 1863.

The Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center is a museum located in Chamberlain. The museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history, culture, and art of the Lakota (Sioux) Native American people. It offers a range of exhibits, artifacts, artwork, and educational materials that provide insight into the history, traditions, and contemporary life of the Lakota people. It also shows various aspects of Lakota culture, including their spiritual beliefs, traditional clothing, artwork, tools, and more.

I ended my journey on the Native American Scenic Byway with a stop at the Dignity: of Earth and Sky statue. This statue is located in Chamberlain along Interstate 90, a tribute to Native American culture and the Indigenous peoples of the region. Standing on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River, the statue depicts a Native American woman wearing a traditional dress and holding out a star quilt behind her. The statue's design and name represent the connection between the earth and the sky, reflecting the spiritual and cultural significance of the land and the sky to Native American communities. Representing honor and respect, the star quilt is an important symbol in many Native American cultures.

The Native American Scenic Byway is a remarkable drive. Every mile is a unique experience. It’s an expedition through time, culture, and nature that leaves a lasting impression on those who venture along its path.
