This route is best explored during spring to fall for the mildest weather and lively local events, while winter offers a quieter, snow-kissed alternative with some twinkling lights along the way.

U.S. Highway 212 has iconic South Dakota destinations that highlight the area’s culture and history. Watertown, a cultural hub, features the Redlin Art Center, showcasing over 150 original works by artist Terry Redlin; the historic Mellette House (home of South Dakota’s first governor); Bramble Park Zoo; and a nearby tribal casino. In the charming town of Clark, the quirky Potato Days festival includes unique traditions like mashed potato wrestling. Down the road, Faulkton boasts South Dakota’s only 110-foot elevator mural and a fully operational 1925 C.W. Parker Carousel. Further west, Whitlock Bay on the Missouri River offers scenic views, prime pheasant country and great steak dinners.

Continuing along Highway 212, check out some of Gettysburg’s offerings, including the West Whitlock Recreation Area, an Arikara lodge reproduction and a salmon spawning station. As you head toward Eagle Butte, explore the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe’s H.V. Johnston Lakota Cultural Center, which provides insights into Lakota culture, buffalo and wild horse tours, dance performances and artisan crafts. In Faith, a quaint cowboy community where the world’s most complete T. rex skeleton was discovered, experience ranch life by attending a real livestock auction at the local sale barn. In Belle Fourche, visit the Geographic Center of the Nation Monument, the Tri-State Museum and the historic Johnny Spaulding cabin. Browse local antique stores, with walking paths and local artist exhibits available at the visitor center.
